The Diary of a Soldier: Page 8
Monday 18 February - The train
ride from Hammelburg to Bremerhaven was relatively uneventful. After
arriving at the docks, we sat on the train for about half an hour,
waiting. Then Major Garr roared up in a rented Mercedes, pulled off the
road and boarded the train. He wasn't aware that Gibbs and his crew from
Benning would be with us and had not made arrangements for
accommodations for them. He and Sawyers sped off in the Mercedes when
Powers showed up in a van to pick us and our baggage up.
| Tuesday 19 February - We had
breakfast at the dining facility. Listened to AFN (Armed Forces
Network) Bremerhaven Radio. Bret and I answered trivia questions
from a copy of People Magazine that he had bought at RAA. Did you
know that Julio Iglesis has three swimming pools at his villa in
Spain? 0920 Hours - Preparing to go to the
docks after playing a couple of rounds of Pinochle with two dummy
partners. I learned that Bret's parents were killed in 1977 in the
Canary Islands when a KLM plane taking off for Holland hit the Pan
Am plane that his parents were on, during take-off. They were bound
for a Mediterranean cruise. |
 |
Wednesday 20 February - We woke to
the cannons, bugle and raising of the flag, prepared to go to breakfast
and Sawyers realized that it was 0730 and we were too late. They
only serve breakfast from 0600 - 0730. We had thought they raised the
flag at 0600, the same as back at Carson. Not so, they raised the flag
at 0700 here.
So Blatnicky and I went to the snack bar
for breakfast. Bret and SFC Sawyers went to see Major Garr for our
instructions for the morning. I ordered scrambled eggs on toast (which
wasn't on the snack bar menu). The girl was confused and asked if I
wanted one egg or two. I said "two". I ended up with two sandwiches with
two eggs on each one. With the coffee, it was $1 (one dollar). The girl
smiled and said "enjoy". Looking back on it now as I read from my diary,
I think everyone around us knew what we'd been through for the last two
months. Maybe this young lady was trying to help nourish me (I probably
weighed 135 to 145 lbs. back then).
|
After breakfast we headed back to the
barracks. We met Bret and Sawyers in front of the library coming to join
us. Sawyers had a small box with TCMB's for 4th Aviation's Hueys and
other equipment that was going back on the Eagle.
We returned to the snack bar and had
coffee while we sorted the packing lists and tore the computer
print-outs off by "type". Bret and Sawyers had breakfast. Bret ran off
to play a video game at the far end of the cafeteria. His breakfast got
cold and we had to wait on him to eat when he returned.
|
 |
0930 Hours - We hurried off to start our
work for the day. Blatnicky and I were to post the TCMB's to the Hueys
while Bret and Sawyers checked the oil and anti-freeze levels in the
Chaperrals and Vulcans. Gibbs and his crew were to gather any trash they
found in the other vehicles that were going on the Eagle.
