In the competition I placed third over-all and was awarded a medal and certificate from the German Army which was presented to me by the Commander of the German forces. Upon return to Carson I also received recognition and orders authorizing me to wear the medal with my dress uniform. Although I was an "expert" with our weapons, this competition was my first exposure to the German weapons we were using; 1) the German G-3 rifle (extremely different from our M-16 Colt), 2) The 9mm handgun (also very different from my M1911 Colt .45) and finally 3) the Uzi 9mm submachine gun (Israeli made). If I could have used my own weapons in the competition, I have every confidence that I would have defeated the Germans hands down. Part of the excitement and adventure though, was using their weapons. The following day we received our orders and SFC Sawyers and I carried them to Finance to get our TDY pay (approximately $151.00 per person). The orders had six people listed as Security Escorts to accompany our equipment back to Ft. Carson.
