The Diary of a Soldier: Page 5
| Thursday 7 February - The last
group of 4/61 ADA left for the Netherlands and their return trip
home. Only two of us from 4/61 remained, SFC Sawyers and myself. There were
four other soldiers from Carson that remained with us, for a total
of six Security Escorts with our equipment.
I had a hot shower, only my third since 9 January. Reading that
entry from my note book brings back memories. |

Friday 8 February - The day before
I got permission to take a trip to Stuttgart. Last I heard, an old high
school buddy of mine was an MP stationed there. I thought it was worth a
try to look him up and see how he was doing. I left at 0830 for
Stuttgart on a tour bus. We arrived at Stuttgart PX, Robinson Barracks
at 1045.
I went to the USO office and asked the
receptionist for her telephone directory. I didn't find my old high
school buddy's name listed.
| Pictured here: SFC Sawyers
standing at a German bus stop. I was going to Weisbaden and he was
going somewhere else, I didn't make a note of his destination and I
can't recall.
Saturday 9 February - I departed
on a tour bus at 0830 for Mainz-Kastel, Weisbaden. Had a nice time. I
bought a ski suit and boots there. On the return trip in the German tour
bus I heard the song, "Rings" by Cimarron, released in about 1972, one
of my favorite songs. I was surprised at the fact I heard it on a German
radio station. The scenery was very beautiful between Hammelburg and
Auschaffenburg. |

After returning from my day trip, Sawyers
and I went to the beer tent and had a few beers with Lt. Stanley. The
band was late and didn't even get their equipment up until 2200 Hours.
